If you have ever seen the Musical production of Les Misérables or the film, you will know it is a very powerful and moving piece of work – based on the book by Victor Hugo, focuses on the injustice and plight of the poor in 19th Century Revolutionary France. Victor Hugo also cleverly works in many gospel themes like grace, compassion and restoration. Victor Hugo’s writing was radical for his day, he was persecuted for his anti-Establishment views and eventually had to leave France, finding refuge in Guernsey, where he continued to write about his beloved France.
Will you join in Our Crusade? Is the title of our Circuit Lent course this year. The word Crusade is a powerful one to use and can be misunderstood. It can mean going on a journey with a purpose and it is this meaning which fits in well as the title for our Lent Course. The word stems from the Latin meaning ‘mark of the cross’. As we prepare for Easter, we remember the cost, the sacrifice and all that Jesus was willing to suffer for us. Those who know Les Misérables will also recognise the line in the final song of the musical. It is the anthem of those who have died for their beliefs, while on their crusade to bring change and make the world a better place. A theme which is not out of place today and resonates with the message of the gospels.
So this Lent we invite you to take time to explore the invitation of the Gospels unlocked over this 7 week course by the Inspiration of Les Misérables film. The book begins Ash Wednesday, the Lent Course group will meet on Tuesday evenings starting 20th February ending 27thMarch. The course book, cost £8.00, has a couple of pages to read each day with a bible passage based on different themes each week. We meet together weekly on Tuesday evenings to watch a clip from the film, reflect and discuss what we have discovered.
Anyone is welcome to come and join the group for just one week, there will be a summary sheet which will help you follow the discussions. The challenge of Lent, in preparation for Easter, is to set aside time to reflect and be challenged by the gospel message. There are cheaper second hand books you can buy, and the Kindle version is about half price. Can you please sign up by 5th February if you want us to order you a book.
Each Tuesday evening session begins at 6:30pm with shared fellowship over a meal. Then we begin the time of group study, reflection, sharing and prayer, which will include a clip from the film. We will aim to finish before 9pm.
